Because the anchor chain is often subject to friction and seawater erosion, it is easy to produce more serious rust, so the coating is required to be resistance, seawater resistance and rust resistance. The paint usually used in marine anchor chain  is coal coke asphalt varnish, which is generally coated with 2 to 3 channels, and the thickness of dry film reaches more than 60 μm.

During usage, the shedding of the paint film due to bumps and other reasons requires repair timely. In a dry environment, use sandpaper to sand the edge of the old paint film, remove dust and dirt, use the brushing method, coat the asphalt paint on the anchor chain carefully. Then coating the second channel after 24 huors, and it can be used after 5 days.  and do not drag and stack anchor chains that are not completely dry during this time.

Marine windlasses can treat newly built anchor chains with shot peening or chemical pickling. Many shipyards use the rolling method to remove rust, the anchor chain is tied with iron wire into a  3m long segments, and put into the drum, then the cylinder is put into the steel wire forging, gold steel sand, iron sheet debris, etc., with the motor to drive the drum rotation, the anchor chain is hit by the abrasive and removes the rust. Marine windlass remove rust dust from the barrel and anchor chain and paint it.
